Anti Cancer Diet: Professor David Servan Schreiber:
Anti Cancer A new way of life
Prof. David Servan-Schreiber was a french born psychiatrist and neuroscientist who was clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and co-founder of the Centre for Integrative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre.
The professor had brain cancer diagnosed 16 years ago and he received conventional treatment and the cancer went into remission, but he relapsed 8 years after that.
Then he decided to learn everything he could to help his body defend itself against the illness. He has kept his cancer at bay for seven years now and in his wonderful book shown on the left he tells you the stories scientific and personal behind what he learnt.
Professor Servan-Schreiber passed away this year after a remarkable period of remission.
We highly recommend this book to you. Our copy was obtained from Readings in Carlton.
NUTRIENTS AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVE
CHEMOTHERAPEUTICS
Why Nutrients?
Standard cancer therapy is plagued by undesirable adverse sideeffects,
including toxicity to normal cells and evasion of immune
surveillance. These drawbacks have fuelled efforts to develop new
anti-cancer agents and additional and/or complementary strategies
to inhibit cancer cell growth. These strategies include approaches
such as:
o cancer immunotherapy
o caloric restriction
. genetic manipulation
o a combination of nutrient/drug which can increase the therapeutic
effect of anti-cancer drugs while reducing undesirable secondary
effects or decreasing the micronutrient deficiencies associated
with chemotherapeutic drugs.
Drug/nutrient combination is a promising strategy to overcome
side-effects associated with high doses of chemotherapeutic drugs
or as a nutrient biological active combination may be used in
patients intolerant to cancer drugs.
Dr. Boik has researched and written two highly acclaimed books on the subject of natural compounds and cancer therapy. The first is Cancer and Natural Medicine (1996), which was praised by medical, oncology, and health journals. The second is Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy(2001), which was released in March 2001.
Reviews for the new book are positive. The U.K. magazine Positive Health called it a "masterpiece." Choice, a publication of the Association of College & Research Libraries, called it "one of the best in the field of herbal medicine." The peer-reviewed journals Pharmaceutical Biology and Journal of Natural Products called it a "jewel," "impressive," and "required reading." Bloomsbury Review called it a "must-have".
If you are a cancer patient, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, scientist, or herbalist, or simply have an interest in cancer or alternative medicine, you will find Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy a highly informative and useful resource.
Cancer and Natural Medicine and Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy are now out of print. However, Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy is available by download on a donation basis.
Dr. Boik is currently President of New Earth BioMed, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to conducting scientific research on the anticancer properties of plant compounds. The Oregon Medical Press web site is no longer being updated. The last significant change to these pages was May, 2003.
Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy, contains the first-ever systematic analysis of a large series of herb constituents and other natural compounds for cancer therapy. This analysis aids in understanding how natural compounds can best be studied as anticancer agents and how they can best be combined to produce the greatest benefit.
"Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy must be considered the ultimate reference for all those interested and working in the area of medicinal botanicals. The painstaking scholarship is evident in every page, and the detailed references underscore the veracity of the claims and comments made. It is a must for anyone interested in the use of natural botanical compounds in the treatment of human diseases." William R. Fair, MD
Former Chief Urology Department
Florence and Theodore Baumritter/Enid Ancell Chair of Urologic Oncology
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
"Anyone interested in a solid scientific basis for natural compounds in cancer treatment should read this pioneering book. Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy provides a wellspring of inspiration and guidance for both researchers and doctor-patient teams alike. If I were diagnosed with cancer tomorrow, this would be among the first references I would turn to." James Duke,
Economic Botanist
Author of The Green Pharmacy
Henry Osiecki has been a leading Clinical Nutritionist in Australia for over 20 years. Over the past two decades he has changed practitioners perception of nutritional thinking from one that is diet based to one that is biochemically and physiologically based.
Henry Osiecki graduated from the University of Queensland in 1973 obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree (with honours) . In 1976 Mr Osiecki obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from the Queensland University of Technology.
Mr Osiecki has lectured extensively to the Brisbane College of Natural Therapies for a four year period from 1984 - 1988. Mr Osiecki has been coordinating the Correspondence
Nutrition Course for TAFE since 1988. Henry Osiecki is a much sought after seminar lecturer and has been a guest lecturer at the Queensland University and the Queensland University of Technology. He has also lectured at the 1st and 2nd Oceania Symposium on Complementary Medicine. Mr Osiecki has been the Chairman for four years for the Oceania Symposium on Complementary Medicine. Henry Osiecki has been an active member of the Save the Children Fund, Disaster Relief fund and Multiple Sclerosis Organisation.
He has written a number of books including texts in Clinical Nutrition, which are used as textbooks in colleges. His publications include "The Physician's Handbook of Clinical Nutrition", "Hypernutrition for Sport", "The Nutrient Bible", "The Asthma Breakthrough" and, more recently "Cancer: a Nutritional / Biochemical Approach edition I and II".
In addition Mr Osiecki has written for the Courier Mail on a weekly basis as a Nutritional journalist since 1990, and has had a weekly radio programme for a period of ten years. Mr Osiecki has been interviewed for a number of television programmes on nutritional issues. Henry's recent focus in the area of cancer is an accumulation of years of research with modern day cutting-edge science. Henry has brought together medical models and traditional therapies to form a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical processes involved in cancer development. He has expanded his theoretical constructs of cancer to include the effects of chemotherapy and surgery, nutritional guidelines for specific cancers, metastasis and cancer prevention programs. Henry believes that sharing the knowledge he has gained from his extensive research on this topic will benefit all health practitioners in clinical practice.
